Sofia: My name is Sofia Rosinsky, I am 13 years old, and I love playing drums, mandolin, ukulele, singing, drawing, and playing with my cat! Also, making short films with my older sister, Alexis Rosinsky.
Daania: Wow, that’s a lot of talents. Playing that many instruments and singing must mean you have a love for music. How/when did you first figure out you loved music?
Sofia: My whole life I’ve grown up with music! My father is a violinist, and my mum also has a great love for music! When we were little, my sister and I used to listen to opera on the way to Ballet class in the car with my grandfather, (he was from russia, but could still sing along in Italian! 😂)
Daania: That’s amazing to be surrounded with music! What’s your favorite part about making short films with your sister? And what sorts of films do you make with her?
Sofia: One of my favorite things about making films with my sister is that we both share the same humor, and are able to collaborate on ideas! 2 years ago we made our first professional short film, which my sister wrote and directed, and I produced and acted in, called Faery. My sister won Breakthrough Director at the Hollywood Reel Independent film festival. It also screened as an official selection in at the Beverly Hills film festival. Faery was our first Union film that we made, but we have several other short films we have made in the past. But our biggest thing at the moment is that we have the rights to the brilliant book, The Librarian of Auschwitz. We are in the process or development, and the role is slated for my sister, Alexis, to play Dita. We traveled and met the Dita last summer.
Daania: That’s quite a feat. So you are also into acting correct?
Sofia: Yes! I am an actor first, and a producer second. Most recently you might have seen my on Disney’s Mini Series, Fast Layne. I played Zora, Layne’s best friend!
Daania: Yes! Speak to us a bit about that, how did you audition for the role? Or how did you end up on that set?
Sofia: I had previously been in an adorable Disney pilot called Forever Boys, in which I played the little sister to Ricky Garcia, Emery Kelly, and Liam Attridge, the boys from the band Forever in Your Mind. The show also starred Kylee Russel and Brec Bassinger (who is actually a lead in my friend Johannes Roberts’s film, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. Johannes and I worked together on a film called, The Other Side of the Door. I’m excited to see Brec at the 47 Meters Down premiere and see if she remembers me!). So from there, I was able to audition for the role of eccentric Zora on Fast Layne, which I was very very lucky to get.
Daania: That’s great! Hope you see her at the premiere! Zora seems like a very fun character to play. What’s your favorite part about her and how had playing that character helped you discover yourself?
Sofia: Well, Zora was definitely an exciting character to play! One of my favorite elements of Zora is her freedom of self. No matter what she does, she means well, and is honest. How did she help me find myself a bit? I was able to learn from her. It was tough, but in the end, she taught me a valuable lesson. And actually, I have adopted from her fashion sense! Hahaha!
Daania: You said you previously did ballet? Do you still do dance or?
Sofia: Yes! Hip hop, very influenced by Bollywood and Middle Eastern style, Hula, and cannot wait to go on point later this year! I love to dance
Daania: You are in another project called “A wake” right? Could you explain a bit about the movie and your role?
Sofia: I was incredibly fortunate for this role. The timing was difficult, but in the end it all came about beautifully! Once again I play the little sister, but this time to the talented, Noah Urrea. The film also stars the amazing, Kolton Stewart. These guys are both stunning musicians, and actors
Daania: Has all these opportunities led you to have an idea of what you want to do as a career? You are still young, so it’s okay if you don’t know.
Sofia: Oh but I do know! My sister and are incorporating our StellaLuna production company. Within our company, I am hoping that we can explore the things in life that are important to us, including world issues, and just flat out stories that we would like to tell. I want to act, produce, and maybe down the road I’ll want to direct.
Daania: That’s an amazing dream. What are some important qualities you think actors/directors should have?
Sofia: First of all, read. Read beautiful literature, and educate yourself. Second, be in the moment. Allow yourself to be in the moment, and listen to the other actor and allow them to affect you. A great book to read on this subject is by Sanford Meinser. My mother introduced us to his teachings and it makes a lot of sense to us. Also, the actor and director must listen to each other. I have been very lucky with that. Third, understand your lines. If you don’t understand your lines, make sure to ask the meaning of the line. A good example of this is in Shakespeare.
Daania: Who are your biggest supporters through all this?
Sofia: Definitely my family. We also have very close friends who are such great supporters. I am very fortunate for that. And also every now and then a stranger in the industry will come out and do something very nice and supportive, which is wonderful.
Daania: That is wonderful to have that support. Who are your biggest inspirations and why?
Sofia: My mum is my first inspiration along with the other women in my family. Mary Pickford, Bette Davis, Alec Guinness, The Coen Brothers, Alexis (my sister), and of course my cat Benita.
Daania: That’s so kind! Is it difficult to juggle school and your hobbies?
Sofia: It is reasonable right now, but I know High School is going to be rough!
Daania: Good luck!!
Sofia: Thank you! Going to need it!
Daania: Is there any advice you would give to teens in general?
Sofia: Actually, I’m the one who needs advice! I’m new to teen-hood! Hahaha! I’d say always be kind, even when it isn’t easy. Never do anything that you would be ashamed to tell your family. And just try to have a good time in this life, and spread some joy! Make a difference when you can.
Daania: Thank you so much! That concludes our interview, but before I go, is there anything else you would like to add?
Sofia: Only that I feel really privileged that you have asked me to do this interview, and you can write me anytime! Thank you! Keep up the great work!
Daania: Thank you! Have a good day!
Sofia: You too!
