Presley: Hi! My name is Presley Tennant. I’m a 17 year old singer/songwriter from Southern California.
Question 1: When did you start singing and how did you get introduced to music?
Presley: When I was younger, I was apart of a girl group called the 5LPs. They really introduced me into the entertainment industry. I performed all the time with the group and completely fell in love with singing, dancing, performing, etc. Ever since then, that’s what I’ve been doing.
Question 2: Let’s talk about the build up to going to the Voice. After the girl group, what did you do about your singing career before going to the Voice. Did you start recording songs, finding a management, going to studios, or was that after the Voice?
Presley: After the group, I realized that music is something that I wanted to do forever. Shortly after I connected with Rosero McCoy, who ended up becoming my manager/creative director and still is, and we decided that the solo route was the next step. Since then I’ve released approximately 10-11 songs and I’m always writing. I’ve been rehearsing & performing for various events. At the time we didn’t realize, but every experience I had, prepped me for The Voice.
Question 3: What was the initial push that made you want to go on the Voice? Did you have that goal in mind the whole time? Or did you just think of going onto the show a couple months before actually doing it?
Presley: It was always kind’ve in the back of my mind cause I have always been a fan of The Voice, however if I was going to audition I wanted to wait till I was about 16 to get the full experience of it. So right after my 16th birthday I went in for the 1st audition.
Question 4: How was the process? Was your first audition the blind audition? Or did you have to do an audition prior? If so, how did that work?
Presley: I cant give away all the magic!!! hehe!! But basically we all had to go through several casting and producer auditions. Once you make it to the producer auditions it starts with rehearsals, early morning calls and interviews. Each audition process varies from a week to approximately a month..
Question 5: It’s all good! How did you feel that moment Kelly Clarkson turned during your blind audition?
Presley: When Kelly turned during my blind audition. I was in shock, excited, ecstatic. Basically any feeling that could portray how excited I was. I literally felt like doing a little dance up there. And then at one point, I felt like I was gonna cry because I was so happy. My feelings we’re everywhere at once. Aha
Question 6: As you progressed through the competitions, what was your biggest fear and what was your biggest memory from the whole experience?
Presley: I didn’t really have any fears during the show. I was simply living in the moment and taking every bit of knowledge I could. My biggest memory though was probably getting to play with the most incredible musicians I will most likely ever get to play with and becoming so close with some of the most genuine people and obviously getting to work with my childhood idol, Kelly Clarkson.
Question 7: Speaking of idols, what other singers are you inspired by, and which singers are your favorite to listen to?
Presley: Growing up I listened to and still listen to Kelly, Jessie J, Demi Lovato, and Christina Aguilera. Now I also listen and look up to their idols such as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Whitney Houston, and many more vocalists in that same realm.
Question 8: What career goals do you have for your future? Is college something you want to consider or do you want a jump right into the music industry?
Presley: Education is extremely important to me and yes I plan to continue my education always. However, I feel that I’m on an incredible journey musically and don’t want to stop the momentum. So I’m going full force with music and will have to see where I am next year.
Question 9: Has education and schooling gotten in the way of music? Was there any low point in your life when you were unsure that you wanted to do music? How did you overcome it? How would you recommend other teens in the same situation?
Presley: Yes and no. I attend a performing arts school and so they have been incredible with my busy schedule, but i’m also a very disciplined student and so I make sure that I get everything done. I never felt like I never wanted to do music but I will say there are days that I feel like I’m stuck in my craft. That’s when I have to dig really deep and push myself out of it.
Question 10: Who are your biggest supporters? Who do you think has always been there for you through all this?
Presley: Definitely my parents, family and my closest friends. They have all been so supportive of each and everything I do. I’m so incredibly grateful for them.
Question 11: What is your biggest goal regarding music? What’s the big dream?
Presley: Definitely having my own tour!!! Traveling the world and having a voice for my generation!!!
Question 12: Your song “Me and You” just came out recently. Could you talk about the song, creation, and idea behind it?
Presley: “Me and You” is probably one of my most favorite song that I’ve realeased. It’s about a young love where the relationship just wasn’t working out no matter how hard they tried. It was full of heartbreak and that’s why they came to the conclusion that there should’ve never been a “Me and You”.
Question 13: Was this inspired by a personal relationship or what was it inspired by?
Presley: So the song was partial written when I went in with an amazing writer and producer named Adam Watts. He shared this song and I immediately loved it. We together finished the writing and recorded it right on the spot. It’s interesting for me as I haven’t been in a relationship yet but I sure did take inspiration from watching my friends relationship and how hurt and sad she was. So I would say for sure inspired is what helped with the writing of Me and You.
Question 14: What is the best advice you can give to teens who want to pursue music and follow your footsteps?
Presley: The best advice I can offer is don’t quit if it’s something you love. Whatever your craft is, you have to work at it and always be kind and never give up.
Question 15: What is the best advice can you give to teens in general about life?
Presley: The best advice I can give teens in general is to really be yourself. Love yourself!
Daania: Is there anything you would like to add?
Presley: Look out for new music and videos coming soon. And thanks for the interview it was a lot of fun!!!
