Alex: My name is Alex Hook and my interests include hanging with friends and family, sports and of course acting!
Question 1: When did you first get into acting, and how were you introduced to it?
Alex: I first started in theatre when I was 6 and later made the transition to TV/Film acting as I got older. Theatre is what really introduced me to acting as I found my love for it very quickly
Question 2: Speaking of which, what roles have you played? And which were your favorite and why?
Alex: Before Frankie I mainly did little commercials here and there. I did though play a young girl who was kidnapped which was a very different genre of acting and therefore challenged me in that sense which was great! Overall, playing the role of Frankie though has been my favourite:) She’s loving, curious, friendly and the best character you could play!
Question 3: Talk to us about how you happened to land the role? How did you hear about the part, audition, all of that stuff?
Alex: My agent received a casting call for the project and submitted me, but It wasn’t the first time Nickelodeon has seen my audition or my name. I recorded a self-tape, then a callback (another self-tape), then they flew me down to Miami for the final set of auditions from which I booked it! This whole process took about 3 months
Question 4: What was your initial reaction to getting the role?
Alex: Tears hahah. I found out over the phone while I was at school and started crying in front of my best friend right away. It was surreal and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing!
Question 5: That’s such an amazing opportunity! You got to rehearse with the cast and crew for a long while, what sort of experience was that for you? New friendships? New experiences?
Alex: It was the best experience of my life. I made lifelong friendships with the cast which is very rare! I was working with my best friends everyday which made it seem like a dream and not a job. We were all various ages between 15-20 which also helped with forming bonds:)
Question 6: Definitely a bonding experience. Are you interested in pursuing acting as a career?
Alex: My goal is to do acting full time, but I am also pursuing a Commerce degree at University in the fall simultaneously. That way I’ll have an education as well if acting doesn’t work out:)
Question 7: That’s smart to have a backup plan. What’s the overall dream goal for acting?
Alex: My dream would be to play in a teen drama tv series similar to Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, etc I love that genre. And of course, Marvel superhero haha
Question 8: What projects are you doing currently? Or are there any other film/theatre projects we should look forward to?
Alex: Unfortunately, as of right now I have nothing on the go, hopefully soon!
Question 9: Has acting ever gotten in the way of school? How have you managed to juggle it?
Alex: Actually, while filming with Nickelodeon, we were given on set teachers to help with our studies along with a required 2 hours a day dedicated to school. They wanted to make sure that we had the necessary resources to do well in school while also putting our best effort into our work as well. It worked out perfectly! Took a little time to get used to studying independently but at least we were given some help!
Question 10: That’s amazing! Speaking of your role as Frankie, what did you learn from her and what did you learn about yourself from her character?
Alex: I found a lot of similarities between myself and Frankie. We’re both very curious people who are always up for an adventure and have our friend’s back no matter what. Frankie’s character was also a fierce combination of strength, kindness and intelligence which I learned to admire very quickly. I’m very grateful that I was given the opportunity to portray such a strong female role and I think kids watching learned just how cool it is to be smart and kind
Question 11: What advice would you give to teens who want to follow your footsteps in the terms of acting?
Alex: Don’t give up!! As cliché as it sounds it’s so important so keep working at it. This industry loves the word “no” which can really affect an actor’s motivation. I always tell myself that the reason I didn’t get a particular role, was because there is a better one coming. As simple as that:)
Question 12: Amazing advice! Lastly, could you give advice to teens not relating to acting? Just in general about life, friendships, school, etc?
Alex: I live by the words “everything happens for a reason”. Whether it may be a small inconvenience in your day or a major change in your life, it’ll all work itself out the way it was meant to be. Stick to these words and you’ll really notice just how positive your outlook on life becomes:)
Daania: Thank you! That concludes the interview. Is there anything else you would like to add to it?
Alex: No, I think that’s good for me:) thank you so much!
