Below is an interview between Anna L. and Collette Jadyn.
Question #1: When did you first start singing or playing your musical instrument?
Collette: I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure I learned how to sing before I could talk. And I started playing guitar when I was 8 after my uncle bought me one, then I picked up ukulele shortly after.
Question #2: What drew you towards your love of music?
Collette: My family is very musical, so we would always have family over jamming in the music room. I wanted everyone to experience how amazing music can be. I always loved listening to music because it was like therapy for when I'm feeling upset or stressed. I couldn't imagine doing any other job that didn't relate to music.
Question #3: What is your goal in the musical career pathway?
Collette: Well...I have a couple. I want by lyrics to be heard and hopefully help people. I also want to be a great role model for my listeners. I plan to be that person that I needed to look up to when I was younger. And I also love to travel so touring would be a lot of fun for me
Question #4: What genre of music do you most enjoy singing playing?
Collette: I grew up listening to a lot of rock with my dad, and pop with my mom. For a while I didn't really know what genres I liked or wanted to play. Now, I think my genre is more indie/alternative, but I also like folk. Really any genre I'm up for singing though cause I'm very open minded with music.
Question #5: What bands would you say inspire you?
Collette: I've ALWAYS loved the Beatles because my dad would sing their songs to me before bed when I was younger. I also really like Weezer, the fratellis, the cranberries, and a lot of 90s bands. But my top is definitely the Beatles because their music is different and inspiring and were written about emotional subjects. A goal I have is to become a writer like Lennon and McCartney.
Question #6: Who is your biggest “cheerleader” when it comes to your music?
Collette: My parents definitely. But my friends are important too because they encourage me when my parents don't know what to do. Mostly my family keeps me going on the days when I don't even want to get out of bed. I also have a lot of family out of the country, so they're always commenting on my YouTube videos and Facebook posts
Question #7: What do you enjoy the most about being a musician?
Collette: Without a doubt performing. Being on stage is SOOO much fun for me and I love to get a good reaction from the audience. I also think studio recording is fun because you can make your song sound exactly how you want it and be proud of it. I also like getting dressed up when I'm about to perform and feeling confident about myself and my music. Also touring.
Question #8: Do you enjoy working in a band or solo more?
Collette: I can't really say because they're both a lot of fun. When I'm by myself I can do and play what I want, but it's a little lonely. When I'm with my band, I have to make compromises, but it's so much fun to work with other musicians that love music as much as I do. My band are also some of the best friends because I don't have to be nervous cause I know that they have my back.
Question #9: What’s the best advice you have ever received about music?
Collette: Probably to never give up, and if this is what I want to do, then I need to do everything to get me towards that goal. My dad always tells me I can do whatever I want in life. I also know my mom always supports me and is good at telling me what I need to do next. Also my choir teacher has always helped encourage me to stay on the right path.
Question #10: Do you find that school gets in the way of music?
Collette: I guess some times it can. I struggle with my grades a lot, and it frightens me if I don't get into a good college. My parents pressure me to keep them up, but it's really hard when you're creatively smart, and not academically smart. I really wish I could get better grades, cause that pushes me further towards my dreams
Question #11: What advice would you give to someone trying to pursue music?
Collette: Even when you feel like giving up, keep going because it's only going to get better. And if you want something, you have to work your hardest to achieve it.
