Jorge: Hi!! My name is Jorge Garcells and I’m a teen Makeup Artist from Miami FL!! I’m 17 and have a huge passion for anything Makeup, Fashion, and Art related!
Question 1: How did you first get into doing makeup?
Jorge: Growing up I loved watching my mom do her makeup. I was mesmerized by the transformation. I would sit and watch her get ready for special events and loved watching her use different colors and products to express herself. Once I got a bit older I started to experiment on my own and began sneaking into my moms room when she wasn’t home to use her makeup and copy the same techniques I saw her use. I became completely obsessed but didn’t have the courage to share my love for makeup with my family and others until a couple years ago.
Question 2: Are there any other makeup artists you are inspired by?
Jorge: My biggest inspiration when it comes to makeup and style in general has always been Lady Gaga. Ever sense I was a little kid I’ve always loved her vibe and out look on fashion and makeup. Even though she’s not a makeup artist herself, I believe she’s influenced the community greatly and I would be lying if I said she didn’t inspire a lot of my looks. As for artists I’ve been super inspired by lately, @mmmmitchell @abbyrobertsartistry and @ethanissupreme have been
KILLING it!
Question 3: In your opinion, what are the most important qualities to have as a makeup artist?
Jorge: Practice practice practice would be my biggest and greatest advice to anyone wanting to do makeup. Never give up. I couldn’t even tell you how many terrible looks I’ve created to get to where I am as an artist and I’m still always growing and learning! It’s all about being determined, having a goal and knowing that every single artist on Instagram started out the same and it was their creativity and passion for the art that took them to where they are.
Question 4: Do you ever find your self struggling to keep up with makeup trends?
Jorge: 100%!! I feel like theirs a new one every single day! But most of the time they don’t even fit my style anyways so I usually lean more towards either being creative and coming up with original concepts and looks or recreating looks from some of my personal favorite visual artists and makeup artists for practice and fun purposes.
Question 5: How would you describe your “look”?
Jorge: I would describe my “look” and very avant-garde and fashion inspired. Especially lately, the fashion and art industry has greatly affected my work. But I can’t even put myself under that box because I’m always drawing inspiration and changing styles, techniques, and looks in general.
Question 6: What do you love the most about doing makeup?
Jorge: The ability to transform has always been my favorite part about makeup. It’s never really been about needing makeup to make myself look better (even though I still love the fact that makeup can help so many men and women have love for themselves and the way they look) but more of expressing my creativity and art on my face.
Question 7: What are some common makeup mistakes people typically make?
Jorge: I would say bronzer and brows are the two most common steps that people mess up a bit lol!!
Question 8: What is the biggest challenge you have to face being a makeup artist?
Jorge: Learning to work with different faces, eye shapes, etc has recently been something Ive noticed I need more practice with. I definitely think it’s a super important skill an artist needs to accomplish to become something huge.
Question 9:What is your favorite makeup brush/product and why?
Jorge: The Morphe 433 + 456 and the Mac 252 are my absolute favorite brushes in my collection. They’ve helped me create so many of my looks if not all and I’ll probably have them in my kit forever. As for favorite product, Anastasia carries my favorite eyeshadow formula to date but I also really enjoy the Morphe shadows more specifically the James x Morphe palette.
Question 10: Has being a makeup artist in your spare time opened up any career ideas or possibilities?
Jorge: Yes! Being a junior in high school I’m still in the process of deciding where I wanna take this passion of mine in the future along with many others but freelance opportunities and work with brands are some of the job/business perks that have come with creating my Instagram acc and online presence.
Question 11: What’s the best advice you would give someone also trying to pursue makeup?
Jorge: For someone trying to pursue an online presence as a makeup artist posting consistently is probably the biggest one. I have trouble with this as well but I believe it’s probably the biggest step in receiving feed back and a following as an influencer in a pool of many. As for someone trying to pursue a freelance job I would say having an organized business plan first (rates, schedule, etc) is really important.
Question 12: What’s the best advice you have received regarding makeup?
Jorge: Just like the advice I gave, practice, creativity, and posting consistently have all been things I’ve been told constantly from other artists/people in the industry.
Kaitlyn: Thank you for doing this interview! Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Jorge: Thank you so much for the opportunity. Have a great day ;)
