Interview with Jeff
We recently interviewed teen photographer, Jeff.
Below is a conversation between Jeff and Daania S.
Daania: Could you start out by introducing yourself and what hobbies you take time in?
Jeff: Hello, I am Jeff, I am 16 years old. My hobbies are mainly playing ball sport such as softball and baseball. I also enjoy photography, and would like to have a part time job in the genre of photography. I mostly work on experimental photography in school but I also take photography outside of school, where I mainly hang out with some of my photography friends and take photos in different locations with the occasional competition within our friend groups.
Question 1: When did you first get introduced to photography and how?
Jeff: I don’t remember the exact time I was introduced into photography, but my parent both used to be semi-professional photographers. Only recently have I been working on photography in a more detailed manner. I have meet many friends of my parents, who are now very talented professional photographer, who have also taught me the ropes of photography.
Question 2: What’s your favorite type of photography to do and why?
Jeff: I usually specialize in experimental stuff, like using different equipment and subjects to create unusually different to what a normal person would think of when photography is brought into mind. There is just a lot of flexibility, and little room for error as there is no wrong way of experimenting.
Daania: Definitely.
Question 3: What is your main inspiration for your photography?
Jeff: This one is a difficult one to answer, I don’t really look up to someone. But I do sometimes look at my parents precious work to gain some inspiration in technique and maybe some marketing experience as well. My schools photography coursework requires us, the students, to research in photographers that we take inspiration from but only within a set theme.
Question 4: What are your career goals in terms of photography? Besides having a part time job? Do you hope to study it as a minor in college? If so, what do you think you would want to major in?
Jeff: In terms of photography, I plan on either making a business out of photography or pursuing this as a hobbie, because this is great fun if you know what your doing.
Question 5: Could you expand on making a business out of photography? How would you do this?
Jeff: Starting out in a photography business is difficult when no one know anything on what you do or what your reputation is like. So using this, making a business out of photography needs a starting point where you expand on your reputation and skill set, this is so that possible clients would go “oh this person seems to know what their doing”
Question 6: What motivates you to continue doing photography?
Jeff: Usually most photographers would like to expand their skill sets and create artwork that would be able to entered into competition. However, here there are not many place that host competitions. So mainly expanding in skills sets would help greatly and also meeting new people is also very fun.
Question 7: What is the best advice you were ever given about photography that teens should hear?
Think of photography as fashion, you want to make the subject, can be alive or an object, have nice clothing, either by adding a nicer background or a nicer foreground, as the clothes.
Question 8: What is the best advice that teens should hear? (Not relating to photography?)
Don’t back down. As teens, you still have plenty of time to do other things of everything. And it’s ok to be a cliche teen, as long as you are happy with the way you are and how you impact the world, there’s no need for change.
Daania: Thank you so much!
Jeff: Thank you.
