Below is a conversation between Daania S. and Madison Ingram.
Daania: Could you introduce yourself and what hobbies you spend time in?
Madison: My name is Madison Ingram, I am fourteen years old. This past year I was captain of my schools dance team. We competed in numerous competitions and often scored high. Currently I am in a musical, Annie, for the past three years I have fallen in love with musical theatre. It’s what I think about all day everyday after being in many Musicals.
Question 1: How did you first get introduced to dance and musical theatre?
Madison: Theatre is something that my great Grandmother did and something my family thought I should try. At first I hated it, I never wanted to go to any theatre classes but then when I auditioned for my first musical, which I didn’t get in, I wanted to keep trying as I progressively got better at acting and singing I continued to audition for musicals and eventually started making it into musicals. As for dance when I started doing musicals, dance was apart of it and I loved dancing it felt like the only way I could truly express myself.
Question 2: How many performances have you been in, which have been your favorite, and what roles were your favorite?
Madison: This is my sixth performance. My favorite performance would be Barnum the musical. Though my favorite role would be a Wickersham in Seussical the musical.
Question 3: As a musical theatre actress, you are required to sing, dance, and act. Do you believe dance is your strongest point due to you being in dance?
Madison: I do!
Daania: Could you elaborate on why it’s your strongest point and how doing dance has contributed to being casted to certain roles?
Madison: When I was on the dance team I not only learned many skills, but I learned teamwork, I learned how to work well with others. Some rolls are required to do many different tricks and different skill levels for example if I wanted to be casted as a lead dance role but I did not have the technique that fits the certain role then I would not be casted as that role, due to my skill level and maybe not even casted at all.
Question 4: Speaking of learning skills from dance, have you learned any skills in theatre? If so, what are they and how do they contribute to your daily life?
Madison: In theatre I have learned to express myself, in the past I have been very shy, not willing to take risks, try new things etc. in that way theatre has affected my decision-making which is an every day task.
Question 5: What singers/actors/dancer/musicians inspire you or you look up to?
Madison: Definitely Sara Bareilles. She has contributed so much to the theatre, music, and acting industry by staying so involved.
Question 6: What is it specifically about her or her acting style that you love?
Madison: She has supported so many community’s including the LGBTQ community, women’s rights and not to mention her hard working trait.
Question 7: What are your career goals in the field of theatre?
Madison: Recently I auditioned for the Colgan theater program and got in! Eventually I hope to expand my knowledge in theater and make it to the big stage!
Question 8: Could you expand on what the Colgan theater program is?
Madison: The Colgan theater program is a program at Colgan high school where in order to continue your years in the program you have to participate in a number of their musicals and plays and one who is in the program will take a theater class every single day on your regular school day.
Daania: Congratulations!
Madison: Thank you!
Question 9: What qualities do you think a good actress/singer/dancer should possess?
Madison: A good actress, singer, and dancer should be aware because you need to always be ready to perform even when it isn’t a set performance date. They should be kind to the others they work with and they should have teamwork and leadership skills.
Question 10: Through grueling rehearsals, endless tech weeks, and memorable performances, it is likely that you have made a tight knit family with the theatre folks. If this has happened, what is your favorite part about it? How has these bonds with your fellow actors/actresses impacted you? Also, how has theatre impacted you?
Madison: These bonds I have gained have made me feel welcomed, even if we have disagreements and arguments about certain things we all love each other equally and we’re always there for each other and support each other so much this has taught me how to appreciate people for who they are. Theater has completely changed my life it is where I have truly found myself. I absolutely love how close we’re are and how supportive we are of each other.
Question 11: Has juggling school, theatre, and dance been difficult for you?
Madison: Yes, but when I have after school work I often do it at rehearsals.
Daania: And how long do you have those rehearsals?
