Katrina: Teen Makeup Artist& Designer
Hi, my name is Katrina and i am 17 years old. My biggest interest is well makeup and design (specifically UI/UX design). A can spend many hours on a makeup look and I can never get tired. My passion is being able to help people through many things. Whether it be community service (shoutout to Key Club and Division 32), creating makeup looks, or through design. Just for some clarity. UI/UX design stands for User Inferface/User Experience. This type of design is digital and is about making sure that the user of an app is having the easiest time going through the app. The job of this type of designer and many others is about making sure an individual is pleased and having a good time.
Question: Great! How did you first decide to get into makeup (as an art)? What made you decide to create a whole instagram page for it? What inspired you to do it creatively?
Katrina: At first I had a YouTube channel and I would do little tutorials. This was in middle school and trust me it was not cute. It wasn’t doing well and I just didn’t like it. One of my friends Vivian told me that I should start an instagram for makeup. I was very hesitant at first because it just seemed so odd. I was so embarrassed of it that I didn’t want my classmates to find it. So, I changed my username to whos.katrina and thought nobody that I knew would find me. It didn’t work. For probably around a year and half I would post very simple eyeshadow looks.
I wasn’t very creative with makeup looks. Around Sophomore year I decided to try creative looks. I’ve always been scared to try it cause I thought I would fail. And well it paid off incredibly. Now I love doing creative looks but of course I do enjoy the occasional simple glam look.
Question: What about UI/UX speak to us about design? What is the concept of that and what makes design so interesting to you?
Katrina: A UI designers job and a user experience designers jobs are different but both have the same goal. the job of a ui/ux designer is about maximizing the usability and experience of the user(the consumer) on many types of machines and software like computers, mobile devices, home appliances, etc. UX designers focus on making sure that the product makes sense to the user by creating a path that makes sense. A UI designer focuses on making sure that the visual aesthetic of the page makes it clear to the user what the path is. What I find so interesting about this type of design is that it brings both my creative and technical side and it helps make the lives of people easier. That’s why I really enjoy creating makeup looks on instagram. I can both be creative and be technical by looking at my insights and researching to create a better environment on my page while, giving people even an ounce of joy.
Question:Has doing makeup, design, and volunteering helped you with any career or educational endeavors? Are you hoping to study design as a career?
Katrina: I am hoping to study design as a career especially working as a designer at a makeup company. All my interests of makeup, design, and volunteering has led me to wanting to be a UI/UX designer. They all just work well together.
Question: Who’s your inspiration? What is so inspiring about them?
Katrina: I don’t really have one person in mind. I draw inspiration from everywhere I look. I can just walk down a street and find inspiration through that. Makeup was a great way for me to de-stress and express myself physically. I just love the transformation and the variety of looks that makeup can give to anyone. There are infinitely many possibilities when it comes to makeup. I’ve loved being creative for a very long time. I remember when I was younger that I would take my reading books and draw in them because I didn’t have any acceptable media’s to draw on. However, i just found that traditional media wasn’t what I really enjoyed. That’s what lead me to design. Design allowed for me to create but digitally. I just love the process. Both makeup and design are two ways that i can be creative just two different media’s. Although, the two may be different they have this major benefit of giving people joy.
Question: Who has been your biggest supporter?
Katrina: I would say my friends. Especially Allyson and Beau. They’re so supportive and I love them.
Question: How are you coping with the current covid-19 pandemic? What do you do in your free time?
Katrina: It has been a very crazy time and I can’t believe that it’s basically the end of my Junior year and i’m going to be a senior next year. I do take college classes at a community college alongside my high school classes so, i’ve been doing a lot of school work. Other than that I like to scroll though insta and watch YouTube especially Stephanie Soo’s mukbangs (love her). I’ve also been creating lots of looks and I do enjoy the fact that I have more time to produce more looks. Makeup in a way is helping me cope with the pandemic.
Question:Do you have any advice to teens following your footsteps?
Katrina: I would say to make sure you are truly enjoying what you’re doing cause in this world I feel like everyone’s trying to get famous and get rich and doing whatever they can to achieve that. If your dreams are to produce music, create the new iphone, be in the engineering field or any field. Just make sure you enjoy it. With all this pressure put on teens to lead the traditional path of life(college, get a job, have a family) and the stress from social media and traditional values other generations might have. I think we need to just find what we enjoy and try to live a positive life and have fun while doing it.
