*A conversation between Anna L. and Neala Luedtke a teen old singer.*
Question 1: How long have you been singing or playing your musical instrument?
Neala: I've been singing ever since I can remember! I made my mom let me take voice lessons when I was 11. I've been posting videos on my instagram account for a year and a half. I also play piano, ukelele, guitar, and a bit of violin.
Question 2: How do you feel when you play music?
Neala: Music is my way of expression to the rest of the world. It makes me feel so many emotions, it really covers all the bases. I can always find a song to sing whenever I'm in a certain mood. Singing is cathartic to me, it's my way of de-stressing after a long day.
Question 3: What is your preferred genre of music?
Neala: I love most kinds of music, but my favorite is indie, or bedroom pop. Anything with a baseline that I can feel in my chest is the best. My favorite to sing is indie, because of the calming nature of the genere. However, I do listen to alternative pop more often then not.
Question 4: When did you first get introduced to music and how?
Neala: Well my mom would always play music in the car, not matter what. We would often just talk over it. Music was constantly around me and in my life, and I soon realized that it was my passion. I wrote my first song in 6th grade, but really started songwriting in 10th grade.
Question 5: Who are your biggest inspirations to your music?
Neala: I was first inspired by dodie to buy and ukelele and post singing videos. Brendon Uris's preforming talent inspires me to get on stage whenever I can. And Billie Eilish inspires me to break away from the mold and make unique music. I have a playlist on Spotify that I listen to whenever I need inspiration.
Question 6: Do you prefer singing covers over originals or vice versa?
Neala: Cover are super fun, and their much easier to prepare. It'll only take me a half an hour to record and post a cover. Originals as much more personal and meaningful, but they take longer to prepare. An original will take me anywhere from hours to days to prepare.
Question 7: What’s an inside scoop to your creative process of creating originals?
Neala: I start with a word or phrase and usually expand off of that. I typically write lyrics, then put it the music. My first few songs were pretty rough; I really hope they never see the light of day😂. But the more I do it, the more the songs sound like something I might listen to.
Question 8: What are your future careers relating to music?
Neala: Music is my passion, but I can't see myself pursuing a career in music. The two major fields of music are performance and teaching, but I don't really see myself doing either of those. I would love to look at a career in music management or advertising.
Question 9: What qualities do you believe a good artist should posses?
Neala: Confidence, but not cockiness. It's a fine line and I'm trying to figure it out myself, but it's very important. I would say a good artist should be persistent and hardworking; you can develop creativity but not grit.
Question 10: What’s the best advice you were ever given relating to music that you believe teens following your footsteps should hear?
Neala: Try out as many parts of music as you can. Composing, playing, singing, songwriting, producing, you never know what your forte will be. Work hard for what you want, even if you don't think it's possible.
Question 11: What is the best advice you can give to teens (not relating to music)?
Neala: Find a balance between work and passion. Doing everything is impossible; you'll burn out quickly. But try to get involved, it will help you find people with similar interests. Try to always stay true to yourself, don't let the people around you change you too much!
Last Question: Any last thoughts you’d like to add?
Neala: If music is your passion- go for it! Even if you think it's impossible, it'll only be like that if you try.
