View the conversation between hex and Kaitlyn C.
Kaitlyn: First, can you start off by giving a brief introduction of yourself?
Hex: I’m an eighteen year old high school student who’ll be graduating this year. I create and design clothing as a hobby and turned it into a business. I’m very passionate about my work and see myself getting better at my art throughout time.
Question 1: Could you expand upon your clothing design business? When did it start? How has it impacted you now?
Hex: As any other business i do plan on expanding my clothing line throughout the area, then statewide, and so on. The idea of me starting a clothing line danced around in my head when i was a freshman in high school but i didn’t execute the idea until my junior year. Man the ways this clothing has impacted my life is kind of crazy. Seeing people support and wear your art is a great feeling. You know you put your sweat and tears into it and just having that kind of motivation to keep on creating what you love is just an unexplainable feeling.
Question 2: Are there any life lessons that owning this business has taught you?
Hex: For sure. There’s always going to be a risk factor. Whether if that is your product not selling accordingly to your agenda and/or investing more than what you receive in return. It’s taught me to be careful with the decisions i make and to make sure that it’s what’s best for the business and my supporters.
Question 3: How do you balance being a business owner and school?
Hex: It’s definitely not easy. I never really was the school type. I make sure to keep my grades at a passing level thats about it. I’m a lot more passionate about my business and my work so usually i tend to work on that before any school work. Although it does catch up with me at times and my grades start to slip up a bit. I just get the school work out of the way the quickest i can and get back to my clothing and designs.
Question 4: Speaking of your designs, what is your inspiration for your clothing?
Hex: I tell stories with my clothing. I look into different eras, cultures, cliques throughout time and do my research. From there i just base my art on that specific setting of my choice.
Question 5: What’s your ultimate career goal?
Hex: To stay true to myself, my art, and my supporters. I want to keep creating what i love and keep seeing people wearing my art. As long as theres always someone out there wearing/supporting my brand then i’ve got nothing to worry about.
Question 6: Who is your biggest inspiration when it comes to clothing design?
Hex: If it had to be one favorite then it would have to be Helmut Lang. A hard choice between him, Raf Simons, and Yohji Yamamoto. The intricacy of his designs and his style of defying the norms is crazy to me.
Question 7: Who has been your biggest supporter throughout this endeavor?
Hex: My family and closest friends. Always giving me the best advice and helping me and my business grow.
Question 8: What’s the best advice you were given that teens following in your footsteps should hear?
Hex: always make sure the number one reason you’re doing what you do is because of your passion for it. once it becomes anything else like trying to gain popularity, money, etc. you lose focus of why you started in the beginning.
Question 9: What is the best advice you can give teens (not pertaining to owning a business)?
Hex: Have fun man. These are your golden years and live them to the fullest. As corny as it sounds, don’t limit yourself to what you can do because in a few years from now you’ll look back and you’ll be able to say i did that.
Question 10: Is there anything else you’d like to add before we conclude the interview?
Hex: Just a shoutout to Cliché Teen Journal for making this interview happen, appreciate y’all.
Kaitlyn: Thank you so much! Have a wonderful rest of your day!
