Dani: My name is Dani Arribere, I’m 18 years old and my absolutely passion is writing and performing music! When people look at me, they always think that I just play guitar, but I also write on ukulele, piano, along with the drums. I picked up the guitar when I was 10 and haven’t put it down since.
Ella: That’s really cool! Question 1, when and how did you first get introduced to singing and songwriting?
Dani: I was a total musical theatre kid growing up, so I would audition for every play in my area. That’s really where my love for the stage and my love for singing came into play. With song writing, I was around 13 when I found an old Johnny Cash CD in my dad’s car and asked him if we could play it. Since then Johnny Cash taught me how to put your true feelings on paper and be unapologetically yourself through music.
Ella: That’s awesome! I’m a musical theatre person too! Question 2, I absolutely love your cover of “ocean eyes”, but I know you also write music, so do you prefer to do covers or originals?
Dani: I actually really LOVE doing covers, because I never sing it like the true artist. I always try to change it up or tweak the song to make it my own. With performing originals, a lot of the time people always say “oh I love that song I think I know that artist” I usually don’t tell them it’s my song, because I take it as a complement. That remark shows me that my tune it catchy and could make it to radio. Plus, when people find out its your song they usually give you the standard “oh it’s really good” rather than maybe a more honesty opinion if they think it’s someone else’s.
Ella: Well I know that it takes real talent to be able to change up a song and make it your own and you definitely are able to do that so bravo. Question 3, what has been your favorite cover to do?
Dani: Aw thank you so much! Some of my favorite covers of “party in the USA” which is on my insta, along with any Johnny Cash song! People never expect me to start singing Cash, so once I do it turns heads and gives his music new life from a female perspective. Honestly, I really love covering male songs because it’s unexpected.
Ella: I totally agree! I’m so happy to be interviewing someone who is honestly so passionate about what they do! Question 4, when I was reviewing your Instagram page, I noticed that you mention god a lot, I assume that you are very religious but it would be nice to get some insight on that.
Dani: Don’t worry at all, I love answering this question! So, I grew up in a faith based home, although I really rebelled as a kid. I hated going to church and I would even pretend to be sick sometimes to get out of it. When I look back I 100% know that it was a maturity thing, always wanting to sleep in or play outside then go to church. But it didn’t take me till my sophomore year in high school to realize that my faith wasn’t just a religion, but a relationship between God and I. Since then I’ve been singing in my church and have been actively seeking more and more info about Jesus through the Bible.
Ella: I’m glad that you have found what is important in your life:) Question 5, who is your biggest supporter or inspiration for your career goals?
Dani: My parents have ALWAYS pushed me towards any direction I felt was right. Being involved with music is usually a phase for more teenagers, but around 2 years ago I sat down with then and truly told them that this is my dream, and I won’t stop till I make it. They listened, and ever since has been my #1 fans, and the best foundation I could have ever prayed for.
Ella: That is amazing! Parents really are the best and it sounds like you were blessed with pretty awesome ones! Question 6, have any jobs opened up that correspond with your career goals?
Dani: Yes! I’m booking a ton of shows for this month and next! I don’t have a manager or agent so I’m personally reaching out to business owners and festivals. Also I am a full time student at a local college in order to get my bachelors degree in business and marketing, so I can market myself in the industry. I have a ton of stuff going on all at once, but I absolutely love being busy!
Ella: Wow! Good for you! Question 7, who is your biggest inspiration in the industry?
Dani: Johnny Cash, although I was never able to meet or watch him perform, there’s something about his voice and storytelling that has changed me as a person. He really went off the beaten path a few times, but I respect that in any artist. When a musician goes against the status quo or what every record label is telling them to do, reveals that their gut feelings need to be heard. I’ve been in stressful situations already with this industry, but I always remind myself “Cash was put in stressful situation too, and still listened to his gut.”
Ella: Question 8, what is the best advice you can give to teens following in your footsteps?
Dani: The best advice would be “you were created to create, NOT duplicate.” I heard those words this year and it truly has changed my perspective on finding my voice, and who I want to be as an artist. Often times we fall into others footsteps rather than making our own with the same end goal as others.
Ella: Question 9, what advice would you give to teens in general?
Dani: Same exact thing! “You were created to create not duplicate.” Being a teenager is when you find yourself, and in high school I know for a fact that we have no idea who we are. So it’s super easy to become molded to our environments whether good or bad.
Ella: That concludes the interview! Thank you so much for your time! Before I go is there anything else you would like to add?
Dani: Thank you so much for having me! Taking time out of your day to speak to me really means a lot!
Ella: Of course! I’m so glad that I was given the opportunity to interview you!!
