Interview with Amisha Sarkar
We recently did an interview with Amisha Sarkar.
Read the interview between Daania S. and Amisha below!
Amisha: Hi! My name is Amisha and I'm from the Bay Area. I'm 17 years old and I love music. Currently I manage an artist and songwrite. I also own a clothing brand called TRST. Clothing Co.
Question 1: How did you come up with the idea of starting your own clothing brand? When did you first start it and how did the idea fully develop and become a reality?
Amisha: I noticed how there was a gap in the market for hoodies that had an actual story/meaning behind the brand. So i decided to create custom sweatshirts for myself to wear. People started to ask where I bought it and I began my company and sold them to everyone I knew. TRST. is trust with out the "u" because of how hard it is to trust people these days. Therefore, I took U (you) out of my trust.
Daania: Wow, that’s interesting!
Question 2: You also wrote a song with Audrey Mika titled TRST, how come that became the title of the song?
Amisha: We wrote that song one night when I was really upset about a person who walked out of my life. The lyrics really encompass a feeling of betrayal and distrust. Therefore, we just felt that TRST. was the perfect title for the song. TRST. is more than just a clothing brand, it's an ideology and statement that applies to everything I create.
Daania: That’s an amazing response to that sort of situation.
Question 3: When did you first gain love in music, and when did you decide you wanted to manage an artist?
Amisha: I've loved music my whole life, but I knew that I never wanted to be an artist myself. When I first met Audrey, I was simply a fan of her voice and her lyrics. As we started becoming friends I noticed that she wasn't paying attention to the business side of things and asked if I could be her manager. Ever since then, we've navigated the music industry together and I've found a love for songwriting along with the business side of music.
Question 4: As a 17 year old, have you graduated high school and do you have hopes into going to college, or would you rather continue with what you are doing now and expand on that? If you are hoping to go to college, what will you study?
Amisha: Yes, I just graduated high school a few weeks ago. I am planning to attend CSU Long Beach this fall with a double major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Music is my passion and my first priority so if college starts to get in the way of chasing my dreams then I'll have to rethink earning a degree.
Daania: Congrats on your graduation!
Question 5: 5 years ago did you ever think you wanted to do what you are doing now, or did you have other intentions? If so, how did those intentions change?
Amisha: My dream when I was little was to open a record label. I gave up on that dream because it seemed impossible. 5 years later and here I am living my dream with my bestfriend is the best way possible. #dreamsdocometrue
Question 6: Do you hope to work for other artists as well and create a management company?
Amisha: Definetly. TRST. Management is a company I hope to establish in the next few years. I am already talking to some new talented artists about working with them.
Daania: That is great to always keep moving with your dreams.
Question 7: Do you have any inspirations? Who are they and what is it that they do that makes them special?
Amisha: Yea for sure. Scooter Braun and Virgil Abloh are huge inspirations to me. They both know how to use their skills in the most creative ways possible. Scooter went through a lot of doubt in the begging of his career and still managed to be one of the most successful people in the music industry.
Question 8: If you could ask them both one question, what would you ask them and why?
Amisha: Scooter- What kept you going during the phase of doubt and lack of resources in the beginning of your career? Virgil- Where does your inspiration come from for all the designs that come out everyday on the Off White platform ?
Question 9: Has music and your company ever gotten in the way of school? If so, how do you overcome that?
Amisha: Yea for sure. During my last three months of high school, I was going back and fourth to LA every weekend and sleeping in on the weekdays to recover. All my grades fell and I almost didn't graduate but I was able to step back for the last two weeks to really focus on school. I knew that graduating would allow me to fully focus on music.
Question 10: You are a part of a Vlog channel, M3 Vlogs with Audrey Mika and Mason Layag. First of all, how did you all meet, second of all, when did you guys decide to make the channel?
Amisha: We all met because I knew Mason and I had just started hanging out with Audrey but they both lived 45 mins away from me. So one day I just invited Mason to hangout with us and the three of us started to bond when we went to LA for the first time in March. M3 started because we started to do a lot of cool stuff with music and traveling and we really wanted to document it and share it with the world.
Question 11: Are there any life lessons you have learned from starting a business or being a manager?
Amisha: Passion and drive can get you anywhere. If you believe in yourself and surround yourself with the right people, you can truly achieve anything.
Question 12: Who has been your biggest supporter through all this?
Amisha: For sure my bestfriend Audrey. She believes in me more than anyone and that makes me believe in myself. She's always there to support me and pushes me to be my best self everyday. I'm so grateful to have her in my life and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us. I also couldn't have done it with out my mom. She's the person who inspires me to chase my dreams and allows me to travel and do what I need to do to achieve my goals.
Question 13: What are some upcoming actions you are going to take to achieve your dreams?
Amisha: We just sold out our first show in the Bay Area. I am also creating connections in the industry and really working on the music. I continue to work hard everyday to make sure that we are getting closer to our dreams. I couldn't do it with out my team and I'm extremely excited for the show and the new music coming out.
Question 14: What is the best advice you have ever received that those following your footsteps should hear?
Amisha: You can't fail if you never stop trying. And, the only person that needs to believe in what you're doing is yourself. As time goes on people will naturally gravitate towards you.
Question 15: What’s the best advice you would give to teens about school, friendships, and just life in general?
Amisha: Don't let anyone change who you are and surround your self with like minded people. You really are who you surround yourself with. And if you have a goal and a dream, chase it. No matter how hard it may seem, it'll be worth it in the end.
Daania: That concludes our interview. Is there any last things you would like to add?
Amisha: No, I think that included everything. Thanks again for taking the time !
