Sneha: Hi! I'm Sneha Pullanoor, an eighteen-year-old Indian. I'm an author, an artist and a technology enthusiast. I am super passionate about investing my skills to make a difference in the lives of others, and I hope to do so by my work and my involvement in various organizations.
Question 1: Talk to us about your book, what is it about, how did you decide you wanted to create and publish it, etc?
Sneha: The book is called "Love as We Know it" and was published by Delhi Poetry Slam, one of the largest poetries organizations in India. It is a collection of various poems and excerpts written by many authors ranging from topics such as self-love to heartbreaks, that is, anything that revolves around love. I saw an application for this while browsing through the website, and I decided to apply for it since writing was something, I was passionate about. Personally, I had written about self-love and acceptance, since a lot of youngsters like me struggle with accepting and loving ourselves.
Question 2: You are also an artist, speak to us about that too?
Sneha: I've loved painting and sketching ever since the beginning and I have been doing it for over 10 years. I have tried exploring every kind of art, be it realistic or abstract. I feel like art is a way through which we can freely express our thoughts. It is about playing with your imagination and trying to find beauty in everything around us. My paintings are mainly done using oil paints and acrylics, and I love sketching using pens and graphite pencils. I always try to convey a message through my abstract artworks, since the ways to interpret them are endless. My artworks have been recently displayed in exhibitions internationally, to be specific, in Myanmar and Ukraine.
Daania: I agree, art is an amazing thing. Congrats on being exhibited!
Sneha: Thank you!
Question 3: Lastly, speak go us about how you came to love tech and all that sort?
Sneha: I was always very curious. I was obsessed with art, but at the same time I loved reading encyclopedias and playing on computers. It is the immense power and impact which technology can have which fascinated me to develop my interest even further. It has the potential to impact the world in so many ways. I taught myself how to code and took various classes at school to increase my knowledge and Computer Science is definitely something I'd love to pursue in college as well. What if there was a way to integrate healthcare with technology and implement solutions just by using computers?
Question 4: What is your ultimate dream career? And what’s your goal for the future?
Sneha: As of now, I’m not really sure about what technical path I want to pursue. I definitely want to take up computer science classes at college, which would help accelerate my goals and my interest. I do not have many plans for the future because I believe the best way to prepare we for the future is to make most of the present and live in it. All in all, I'd like to step out of my comfort zone and explore all the opportunities I could possibly get. While exploring various concepts and aspects of computers, I realised that it was possible to create an impact if you had the will to do so. My ultimate goal is to be able to create something which has the potential to be the next breakthrough invention of the century. I see myself taking up ventures which will provide solutions for pressing real-world problems.
Question 5: What sort of things are you doing now to work towards your dream?
Sneha: As I've mentioned about my passion for cs, I have been doing various online courses and studying through books. Along with this I'm the Chief Technology Officer of ChangemakerZ, a student initiative which aims to empower, educate, and connect Gen Z-ers interested in entrepreneurship over a common platform. I'm also the Head of Web Dev and Tech of the Fortnightly Scientist, an online STEM magazine. These two helps me develop my technological skills further and also helps me give back to the community. I’m also the Director of Curriculum for Project Exchange, a student run non-profit organization increasing access to cross cultural learning experiences students around the globe through digital technology solutions. I’m also an Executive Member at HAX, a global non-profit organization dedicated to making computer science education accessible with a specific focus on women and disadvantaged minorities by conducting hackathons. These opportunities help me give back to the community along with building meaningful relationship and creating an impact. To develop my writing skills, I'm a writer at Girl Genius Magazine, an online STEAM Magazine which helps educate girls interested in STEAM fields.
Question 6: These are all great opportunities you have managed, could you give advice to teens on how they can join the community such as you have?
Sneha: The main problem which I had faced was the lack of opportunities in my area. I therefore resorted to ways online, such as LinkedIn and RoundPier, which helped me connect with various teenagers with similar interests and passions. Do not think that you are alone, there are a lot of students around me and you who are dedicated and determined towards their goals. Be open to share ideas and reach out to people, it can help in numerous ways. These helps build great bonds and meaningful relationships both professionally and personally!
Question 7: Who has been your biggest support or motivation while you do all this work?
Sneha: My biggest supporter as well as my motivation has definitely been my mom. She manages the household and her job with ease. She has always had my back since day one. She always encourages me not to give up when things aren't right or be afraid to take up a job or reach out to people.
Question 8: That’s great to have such support! Doing all this must be difficult, does it ever interfere with school and how have you overcome that problem?
Sneha: To be honest, there have been times where it has been difficult to manage both of them together. But the key to managing your interest and school is to manage your time, there is no other way to it. Create schedules, dedicate certain hours and plan your week before it starts. It can sometimes be overbearing, but it's worth it!
Question 9: Of course! What advice would you give to teens who want to follow your footsteps?
Sneha: My advice would be to first find your voice and your passions. Create opportunities if you dont find one. Share your ideas and talk about the things you are passionate about. You will find people with similar aspirations and similar goals!
Daania: Thank you! That concludes our interview
Sneha: Thank you so much for this opportunity!!
