Berlin: my full name is Berlin Zimbelman I am 14 years old and I write music, sing, play piano, and i like to play basketball sometimes
Question 1: When did you first get introduced to music and how?
Berlin: I first got introduced to music when I was 4. I have a video on YouTube of me singing when I was four years old in the car and the band who wrote that song saw my video and wanted me to come meet them. That’s when I knew that I wanted to do music and perform like them.
Question 2: How was that experience? Who was the band and what was so inspiring about it?
Berlin: the band was not very well known but they’re called the sounds. They invited me backstage to one of their concerts and when i saw them play i was so mind blown . They were just so amazing but it was so effortless and they made it look easy.
Question 3: What’s your favorite part of being a musician?
Berlin: My favorite part is being able to put my emotions into songs when I can’t talk about them normally. I also like performing because it makes me feel alive. I also like seeing people appreciate my music in ways I probably wouldn’t
Question 4: Who is your biggest inspiration as an artist?
Berlin: I have a lot of inspirational artists that I look up to, but I really like Amy winehouse. She is very raw and real. Her music is amazing but unfortunately she died too young. And she was very talented and everything she sang was so truthful
Question 5: If you could ask her one question what would you ask?
Berlin: I would ask her what part of writing her songs was most difficult for her because even though it’s easy for me to come up with ideas and write songs, I still get writers block sometimes and it’s hard for me to come up with complex clever lyrics
Question 6: Do you ever struggle to juggle school and music?
Berlin: I did in middle school but Now that I am being homeschooled for my freshman year it will be easier to me to work on my music. But even when I was in school, I was still in a music production class that helped me learn more about music in general. But I worked on music all weekend so it wasn’t that difficult.
Question 7: What made you decide to be homeschooled? Was the change scary?
Berlin: I am going into high school right now so I have never done it before. It is kind of scary because I have a lot of friends that I probably won’t be able to see a lot anymore. But the reason I wanted to do it is because I will be able to work on my music which will open more doors for me and give me opportunities to meet new people.
Question 8: Who has been your biggest supporter through all this?
Berlin: My biggest supporter is by far my family. My dad is basically my manager and my mom is very supportive. My brother loves my music as well.
Question 9: That’s great to have such a supportive family. Has music opened up any career paths you want to explore?
Berlin: Yes. Music has allowed me to see that if performing becomes too difficult I can also write music for people. That has been something that I have considered as well.
Question 10: Is there any advice you would like to give to teens following your footsteps?
Berlin: I would probably say to just do what you think is best for you career wise. And do what makes you feel comfortable and don’t listen to anybody who doubts you. And inspiration is everywhere, and you can get inspired from anything .
Last question: What’s the best advice you can give to teens in general?
Berlin: I would say to just try and do something original and something that people are going to remember for a long time. And also don’t do something just because you think it’s “trendy”. Try to be your own person because those are the most interesting people .
Daania: Thank you! Any last things you would like to add?
Berlin: no I think that is it
Daania: Thank you!
