View the interview between Kaitlyn C. and Miss Zodi.
Miss Zodi: I’m Miss Zodi , And AFAB and non binary drag queen from south west England. I spend my time creating drag looks and performing around the U.K., building my online persona and drag character .
Question 1: What does it mean to be a non-binary drag queen?
Miss Zodi: For me being a non binary drag queen means breaking down gender stereotypes and boundaries set by the binary. I can explore a whole new realm of gender expression and opportunities which opens a gate of so much more creativity and freedom for expressing my self and my identity .
Question 2: That’s very cool. How were you first introduced to drag?
Miss Zodi: I was first introduced to drag through watching rupauls drag race. I enjoyed the show a lot but I was searching for something more so I began looking into different U.K. queens and local scenes around me and other younger AFAB artists like myself. From there I started creating my own looks and working on my own drag character whilst still discovering new queens and styles of drag along the way :)
Question 3: What motivates you to continue to be a drag artist
Miss Zodi: I have many reasons to be motivated to continue Persuing drag , one of the main ones being all the young queer individuals that I have messaging me and reaching out to me explaining how I’ve inspired them to do drag too or just helped them be themselves. Drag allows you to bring a light of positivity to people that you wouldn’t be able to do in any other way and it definitely makes all the hard work worth while. As well as that drag has given me so much confidence and has allowed me to be my true self 100% authentically, which I wouldn’t give up for the world .
Kaitlyn: That’s so amazing that you can help other people as well as yourself with this, I think that’s great.
Question 4: Do you have any other drag artists that you look up to or that keep you motivated?
Miss Zodi: I have so many drag artists I love and respect I wouldn’t be able to list them all else I’d be here for hours ahah, one of my biggest inspirations is the uk’s best drag monster ‘Charity Kase’ I’ve respected her work so highly for a very long time now, her creativity is beyond. I also have all the respect in the world for Dundee queen Miss Peaches, her hard work and dedication to what she does and the success she has had in the short time she has been doing drag is nothing less than inspirational.
Question 5: What is the inspiration behind your makeup looks?
Miss Zodi: I have really vague and sometimes quite random inspirations behind my looks but I’d say I’m most often inspired by song lyrics and movies/cartoons.
Question 6: Can you explain how long one makeup look takes and the process behind each one?
Miss Zodi: My makeup looks can take anywhere from between 2 and 5 hours , for my regular ‘drag face’ it will take me about 2 and a 1/2 hours whereas for more complicated looks such as my recent leopard print and rose print facekini looks took me around 5 hours each. I always start my process by having s clear image of what I want to do in my head before starting but I never sketch it out as I can end up getting too set in my ways and not allow any room for alterations to my designs .
Question 7: Very interesting. Who would you say is your biggest supporter?
Miss Zodi: I think my close friends are my biggest supporters , I’ve got an amazing network of friends and other drag artists around the U.K. and I couldn’t be more grateful for them. My dad and my twin brother are also maybe my truest fans, they support me in any way they can do I can succeed with what I’m doing :)!
Kaitlyn: It’s so cool you have a great group of people supporting you!
Question 8: What is your response to people who say that females can’t do drag?
Miss Zodi: I get a lot of hate for being an AFAB individual doing drag but my response to them is always that drag is an art form, it cannot be policed purely by what you have between your legs. Just as much hard work and effort goes into female and trans queens’ drag as cis Male queens’ do, and we make just as good entertainers doing so .
Question 9: That’s a great response! Has drag opened any career opportunities for you?
Miss Zodi: I think drag has helped a lot with inspiring me and giving me practice to go into a makeup artistry career path, it’s also definitely opened up doors for booking opportunities and working with brands that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to without it .
Question 10: What is the best advice you were given relating to being an artist that people following in your footsteps should hear?
Miss Zodi: I think the best advice I could give to people wanting to do the same as me is ; always be unapologetically yourself, spread kindness and always give to people the light and confidence that you would want to be given yourself. Stay humble and use your voice to spread awareness and fight discriminative intolerance in any way you can.
Kaitlyn: That’s very good advice. Is there anything else that you’d like to add before we conclude the interview?
Miss Zodi: No I think we’ve covered everything thank you my love :) do you want any images / info on where people can find me etc?
Kaitlyn: Absolutely! That would be awesome, thank you!
Miss Zodi: Okay love ! I will be attending Dragworld UK in London this year as part of the All Drag Is Valid booth and any other time u can be found travelling around the U.K. which will always be updated on my socials : @misszodi on Instagram, @MissZodi on Facebook and @Miss_Zodi on twitter.
