*A conversation between Anna L. and Avery Green, a 16 year old musician.*
Question #1: When did you first start playing your musical instruments, and which one did you play?
Avery: I started playing the violin when I was about six (much to my mothers reluctance, as you can imagine)m and continued playing up until I was twelve; I’d just lost all the enjoyment in it. When I was 14, I picked up the electric guitar for the first time and I’ve been playing it ever since. Currently I play the piano, guitar, bass, and drums.
Question #2: What drew you towards your love for music?
Avery: While some might argue that math’s is the one true universal language, I firmly believe music communicates what mathematics cannot: emotion. As a child, I’d always been fascinated by patterns and tessellation, and the rhythms and harmonies of music represent exactly that in a listenable format. In the essence, I just think music is beautiful.
Question #3: What musicians would you sat have inspired you?
Avery: Animals As Leaders is the first band that comes to mind in terms of inspiration for general song writing. A lot of my melodies are very neo-classical, and I’d probably attribute that the Yngwie Malmsteen and Trivium, and when it comes to singing Thom Yorke has written some wonderful lyrics that inspire a lot of my music, even though it’s instrumental.
Question #4: What qualities do you think a good musician should possess?
Avery: As boing as it may sound, the dedication to practice is truly what makes a good musician. In my opinion, anything within your physical capabilities can be learned if you put in the hours.
Question #5: What is your goal on your musical career pathway?
Avery: The Perfect life for me would be one in which I can fully support myself financially via musical means. I’d be doing something I love for a living and that’s good enough for me. In terms of technical ability, however, I hope I’m never satisfied; musicianship is always a journey, never a destination.
Question #6: How would you describe your genre of music?
Avery: I think “modern prog rock” describes it best. It’s energetic, heavy, and sometimes downright weird.
Question #7: How do you feel when you play music?
Avery: Well, I think that’s down to the piece being played. I try my best to get as lost in the music as possible; it’s far easier to convey emotion through music when you’re feeling it yourself.
Question #8: What do you enjoy the most about being a musician?
Avery: First and foremost, I’d say that my favorite part of being a musician is knowing that there’s always something new to explore and get better at. Closely following in second place is the satisfaction of showing off an incredibly complex, flashy piece in front of a crowd and nailing it.
Anna: Thank you for answering all the questions completely! Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Avery: You’re very welcome! And no, I think that’s all.
