*A conversation between Anna L. and Sasha Bellentine, a 16 year old singer/song-writer.*
Question 1: When did you first start singing and playing your musical instrument?
Sasha: I’ve always loved to sing and I’ve been in choirs throughout all my schooling. I started piano lessons when I was six and since then I’ve started playing guitar and ukulele too. I don’t remember exactly when I wrote my first song, but it was sometime in elementary school.
Question 2: What drew you towards your love for music?
Sasha: Before I even knew what I was doing, I was writing songs. It wasn’t a conscious decision, music was just what connected with me most and creating music felt like the most authentic way to express myself.
Question 3: Would you say that there are any specific artists that inspired your music type?
Sasha: I definetly would say that. I listen to loads of stuff and I’m probably influenced by all of it. I would say that I have a similar vibe to an artist named Maggie Rogers. I’ve always loved pop divas like Christina Aguilera and now Dua Lipa. I also love old jazz legends like Billie Holiday and singer-songwriters like Carole King. I find myself listening to music soundtracks, musical theater, electronic dance beats, and really just anything that catches my attention. I think my influences show up in my music, but I listen to so much different stuff that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where a sound or style came from.
Question 4: What would you say your style of music is?
Sasha: I haven’t been sharing my music publicly for very long and I’m always learning so I like to think my sound is evolving with time. Right now, I definitely write on the poetic side and I’ve been loving layering that with dance/electric influenced production. Who knows though, When I listen back to collections of songs I’ve made I can hear that I have a style. But as I’m making them, I’m never thinking about maintaining a certain vibe or sound scheme, I just do what sounds good to the ear.
Question 5: What qualities do you believe a good musician should possess?
Sasha: Haha, I don’t know if I’m qualified to answer this one. Everyone has their own taste as far as what they want to listen to and create so I don’t think there’s any set criteria for what makes a “good musician”. I guess I would say if you love music and want to pursue it then you’re obviously qualified. Just go make it happen.
Question 6: How does it make you feel when you sing or play your music?
Sasha: It makes me feel great. Before I started making music, I clocked so many hours just listening to it, and I still do. Music will amplify any mood and provides a great escape for whatever is going on.
Question 7: What is your music career pathway goal?
Sasha: I want to be a songwriter. Right now, I mostly write music for myself, but as I progress my goal is tot write mostly for other artists. I like singing and I like performing too but songwriting is where everything started for me and is definitely the direction I want to go.
Question 8: What advice would you give to young songwriters?
Sasha: Haha I don’t know, I am a young songwriter. I guess I would say to write all the time and believe your stories are worth sharing.
Question 9: What do you like most about being a singer/song-writer?
Sasha: I love what it feels like when I get an idea and I can just sit at my piano or laptop setup and get lost in that for hours and hours. I don’t think I feel that kind of focus for anything else. It is very satisfying when a project is finished, and you can hear all the work you put into it but for me the creative space and the hours out into making something new are unbeatable.
Anna: Thank you! Do you have anything else to add?
Sasha: I don't think so. Thanks for doing this!
